Biodiversity is more than diversity of species in nature. It also involves genetic diversity in crops and farm animals, for example. WUR, together with partners, works to preserve genetic resources, genetic diversity within animal species and biodiversity in grassland and soil life.
WUR academics do not pit biodiversity and agriculture against each other: they see both as inseparable. For example, more and more livestock farms are interested in promoting biodiversity and focusing on species-rich, herb-rich grasslands. This increases the abundance of plants, insects, meadow birds and soil life. Such grasslands on dry sandy soils are also more resistant to drought.
We are also looking at genetic diversity between and within farm animals and crops. A diversity of hereditary traits within a species is crucial to be able to respond to a changing climate and different living conditions. To preserve our bio-cultural heritage, genetic material of (rare) farm animals is stored in Wageningen.
Our research, facilities and pilot sites allow us to manage changes in agriculture and nature management faster and better. Systems that are in balance with nature are the future: they are more sustainable and resilient. Good for people, animals and nature.

Grass and grazing
Grass and grazing are the basis of dairy farming. Covering one million hectares, grass is the largest agricultural crop in the Netherlands. Optimal land use is essential for a sustainable food system. Through research into fresh (herb-rich) grass as the basis for the feed of the fu-ture, WUR is working on future-proof, land-based dairy farming.

Genetic diversity in farm animals
Genetic diversity among farm animals is crucial to be able to keep pace with changes in live-stock farming. The changing climate, for example, requires resilient animal breeds that remain healthy and productive under a variety of conditions. WUR researches, advises, manages and promotes genetic diversity through research and the gene bank.

Animal centered
Humane animal husbandry goes beyond good nutrition and health. Animals should be able to display their natural behaviour and experience positive emotions. Together with all stakehold-ers, WUR is looking for solutions to design the living environment of farm animals in a way that contributes to their quality of life.
Circular livestock farming
Every link in the livestock farming chain, and therefore also in the food processing chains, produces nutrients or raw materials, never waste. WUR translates this principle into circular agrifood systems. These retain nutrients as much as possible and limit losses to soil, water and air. This allows livestock farming to be in balance with the natural carrying capacity of areas.
Animal health
Healthy and strong animals are less affected by diseases and require less medication. In WUR studies on livestock systems, preventive care is central, to stimulate resilience in animals. To-gether with entrepreneurs and experts from the business community, among others, we are working on indicators to measure resilience.
