About ethylene measurements
Ethylene is a gaseous plant hormone that regulates ripening and ageing. During storage or transport, even low concentrations may affect sensitive products, causing effects such as degreening, softening, senescence or increased susceptibility to fungal growth. Sources can include ripening produce, combustion engines and mixed product loads.
Wageningen University & Research helps you determine the ethylene concentration and assess the associated quality risk. For an incidental check at your facility, we send eight special syringes with instructions on where and how to take air samples and which conditions to record. You return the samples for analysis with calibrated equipment. We report the results by email, together with advice on potential countermeasures.
For monitoring during transport, a battery-powered Air Sampler can collect up to 24 air samples at programmable intervals for subsequent analysis by gas chromatography.
