Facilitating multi-stakeholder collaboration

About this expertise
In short- Facilitating multi‑stakeholder partnerships (MSPs)
- Co-creation methods and participatory design
- Governance frameworks and institutional alignment
- Dialogue, capacity strengthening and collective action
Addressing complex challenges like climate adaptation, land use, and food security requires collective action. Wageningen University & Research fosters multi-stakeholder collaboration, uniting farmers, policymakers, NGOs, researchers, and businesses to co-create evidence-based solutions, strengthen cooperation, and study what drives effective partnerships for sustainable food system transformation.
To create sustainable impact, we build bridges between diverse actors across the food system. Getting actors to collaborate is not always easy when interests and worldviews diverge. Our approach supports inclusive decision-making and long-term commitment through structured stakeholder dialogues, trust-building processes, and shared goal-setting.
We apply systems thinking and participatory action research to align interests and address power dynamics. Whether in regional food hubs, agro-ecological transitions or value chain development, our methods support co-creation of knowledge and joint sense-making.
Our experts help design and facilitate tailor-made multi-stakeholder processes, supported by tools like serious games, collaborative learning journeys and governance assessments. We also strengthen multi-stakeholder collaboration capacities of local facilitators and organisations in various geographical contexts.
Through ongoing partnerships in countries such as Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Rwanda, we have seen how well-facilitated collaboration unlocks innovation, strengthens policy, and delivers more equitable outcomes.
