BLOG: Expertise required for many different species at the Beam Trawl Survey

Researchers of IMARES are on a Beam Trawl Survey in the North Sea, to get fisheries independent stock indices and estimates of the age-structure of North Sea plaice and sole. Up to now, we caught 53 finfish and elasmobranch species, and 139 shellfish and benthos species. Sorting and identifying species requires good knowledge of demersal species. That's why IMARES organises an annual demersal fish and benthos test to keep track of the identification skills. IMARES scientist Ingeborg de Boois reports about the BTS in a Ship Blog.

The Beam Trawl Survey indices are used by the ICES Working Group on the Assessment of Demersal Stocks in the North Sea and Skagerrak for stock assessments and recruitment estimation. Both are important data sources for the catch predictions and hence for management advice.
