Spinoza Prize

The Spinoza Prize, offered by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), is the highest scientific research award for top scientists in the Netherlands. The laureates are internationally renowned and know how to inspire young researchers.

    2009: Spinoza prize for his groundbreaking contribution to understanding critical turning points in complex systems, varying from transitions in shallow lakes to climate change and the collapse of ancient cultures

    2008: Spinoza prize for groundbreaking research into the contribution of microorganisms to our food and health

The NWO Spinoza Prize is the highest award in Dutch academia. Each year, NWO awards the NWO Spinoza Prizes to two researchers working in the Netherlands who according to international standards belong to the absolutely best researchers worldwide. The NWO Spinoza Laureates do outstanding and groundbreaking research with broad impact. They are an inspiration for early-stage researchers.

The laureates each receive a bronze statue of Spinoza and 1.5 million euros. They are free to spend this as they wish as long as the expenditure is related to academic research.
