Microbiome, Lumen & Diet, Mucus & Milk

Our research is focussed on the role of the microbiome in the intestine and how this is related to diet and health. We investigate, among others, intestinal microbes that are specialised in the degradation of dietary components, such as fibres, as well as host produced glycan rich proteins, including mucus & human milk components.

Key research issues include:
Research topics focus on innovative cultivation-based and molecular approaches aimed at understanding composition and functionality of the intestinal microbiome. Our research combines in vivo microbiological studies with human volunteers and underlying mechanistic in vitro studies using inocula derived from intestinal samples as well as synthetic consortia mimicking different parts of the intestine.
