Ambassador Paulo Roberto França thanked Hulsman for her efforts to bring Brazil to the attention of the Netherlands and Wageningen University & Research. For more than seven years, as regional manager at WUR, she has been the link between WUR and Brazil. For instance, Hulsman supports the development of large EU and NWO research projects that are organised together with researchers from the state of São Paulo. She also accompanies delegations from Latin America that are visiting WUR and is involved with setting up specific cooperation programs, WUR's Joint Doctoral Program with the University of São Paulo, for example.

Deep in the Amazon

Partly as a result of Hulsman's work, WUR has established intensive cooperation with Brazilian companies, educational institutions and other organisations, including those in the field of agriculture, biodiversity and climate. According to Hulsman, her award is not only a personal honour, but also a sign of appreciation for this institutional cooperation.

She responded modestly to all the compliments and congratulations: 'I could never have received this award without the commitment of many WUR colleagues. It really is teamwork, so my colleagues actually also deserve this award.'

Hulsman has a strong personal connection to Brazil. She worked for more than six years in northern Bolivia, deep in the Amazon, on the Brazilian border. There she got to know the resilience of Brazil ('Brasiliência') and some of the Portuguese language. 'If you know more of the Amazonian culture, and have been in it, you can understand the complexity better.'

O Embaixador Paulo Roberto França agradeceu à Hulsman por seus esforços para promover o Brasil na Holanda e na Wageningen University & Research. Como gerente regional da WUR, ela é o elo entre Wageningen e o Brasil há mais de sete anos. Entre outras coisas, Hulsman apoia o desenvolvimento de grandes projetos de pesquisa da UE e da NWO que são organizados com o estado de São Paulo. Ela também acompanha delegações da América Latina no campus e está envolvida com o estabelecimento de colaborações específicas, como o Programa de Doutorado Conjunto da WUR e da Universidade de São Paulo.

Nas profundezas da Amazônia

Em parte devido ao compromisso de Hulsman, a WUR construiu uma intensa colaboração com instituições de ensino e outras organizações no Brasil nas áreas de agricultura, biodiversidade e clima. Segundo Hulsman, sua distinção não é apenas uma honra pessoal, mas também um sinal de agradecimento por essa colaboração institucional. Ela reagiu com humildade a todos os elogios e felicitações: “Nunca teria recebido esta distinção sem o empenho de muitos colegas da WUR. É um verdadeiro esforço de equipe e, portanto, meus colegas também merecem essa distinção.”

Hulsman tem uma forte ligação pessoal com o Brasil. Por mais de seis anos, trabalhou no norte da Bolívia, no interior da Amazônia, na fronteira com o Brasil. Foi lá que ela conheceu melhor o país e a língua portuguesa. “Se você sabe mais sobre a cultura amazônica, e já viveu nela, você entende melhor as suas complexidades.
