Food education for children and young people aged 0 to 24 strengthens food literacy and encourages healthy and sustainable food choices with lasting impact. Through our research, partnerships and advisory work, we educate young people and support organisations in promoting healthy and sustainable eating habits.

Approach

Our expertise in food education connects scientific research on behavioural change, education and nutrition with practical applications in schools and childcare facilities. We develop educational programmes and teaching materials such as Taste Lessons, the EU School fruit and vegetables programme, and the EU School dairy programme, together reaching around 80% of primary schools in the Netherlands.

Our research focuses on the needs, effectiveness and implementation of food education, working closely with young people themselves. We also study food policies in school and explore additional ways to encourage healthy and sustainable behaviour among children and adolescents. These insights are translated into effective interventions, ensuring that science and practice reinforce each other.

In developing our programmes and activities, we prioritise objectivity, scientific substantiation and alignment with educational goals. Through close and long-term collaboration with schools, policymakers, and organisations in the fields of nature, health and nutrition, food education has become firmly embedded in Dutch society.

Impact & Society: Taste Lessons

Taste Lessons is a food education programme that targets elementary school children and provides fun, interactive information about nutrition, health and sustainability. Children engage with the teaching material by actively participating.
