Sea urchins in the Caribbean sea are not doing well, yet represent key stone species essential in maintaining healthy coral reefs. To aid their recovery researchers from Van Hall Larenstein, Wageningen University and Wageningen Marine Research have been working on new approaches in collaboration with the Saba Conservation Foundation. One of these new approaches consists of providing substrate and fresh biofilm in the form of bio balls that will allow sea urchin larvae to settle. Nature Today wrote a nice article about this. Dr. Alwin Hylkema, who recently successfully defended his PhD thesis, will be continuing this work in Saba.
