Project

High value ingredients from marine-based biomass for health

This project focuses on the valorisation of marine bivalves using the total use concept and possibilities to apply this concept to other low trophic resources. Specifically, using biorefinery, three fractions are created from mussels: 1) a bioactive fraction, 2) a protein rich fraction, and 3) shells.

In the development of circular and climate neutral food, feed and non-food production systems, low trophic marine biomass such as bivalves will play an important role. Some types of marine biomass, such as mussels, possess animal health promoting properties. This project focuses on the valorisation of marine bivalves using the total use concept and possibilities to apply this concept to other low trophic marine resources. Three fractions are created from mussels:

  1. A bioactive fraction, to be used in aquafeed;
  2. A protein rich fraction, to be used in food;
  3. Shells, to be used as construction material.

Food and feed safety will be taken into account for these fractions. In addition, this project focuses on dissemination of the produced knowledge, not only from the current project, but also including knowledge from the KB34-3a-1 project upon which the current project builds. We target for mussel as a model species, while exploring the potential for low trophic marine resources.
