Global Nutrition

The chair group Global Nutrition (within the Division of Human Nutrition and Health) led by prof.dr.ir. EJM (Edith) Feskens focusses on nutritional needs and interventions to achieve and maintain optimal health throughout the life span. Dietary intake, nutritional status and functional outcomes are studied at the individual level as well as in public health related interventions. Food systems in Europe and LMIC are also studied aiming a transformation towards healthier and more sustainable diets. Research and training are concentrated on nutrients, dietary patterns, and food systems with physiological and environmental focus.

The chair group covers the following research lines:

  1. Micronutrient malnutrition: aims to determine new and sustainable solutions for micronutrient malnutrition in low and middle income countries.
  2. Dietary assessment and nutritional behaviour: aims to develop new methodologies and tools (including artificial intelligence) that allow the assessment of dietary intake and nutritional behaviour.
  3. Food systems for healthier diets in LMIC: aims to guide transformations of food systems toward healthier diets for poor populations in a sustainable and equitable way.
  4. Healthy and sustainable diets: aims to formulate diets that are not only sustainable and healthy, but that also fit national food cultures.
  5. Early-life nutrition: This research line focuses in the nutritional exposures and health outcomes prior-conception, pregnancy, infancy and early childhood.
  6. Nutrition, obesity and the metabolic syndrome

Education is offered at BSc, MSc and PhD level on food intake, nutrients and their function, and public health nutrition in high- income and low- and middle- income countries. Important aspects of all training are principles and methods of nutrition research, including food intake and food composition, determination of nutritional status and the design of controlled intervention studies.

From September 2015 onwards we organize the Distance Learning Master Nutritional Epidemiology and Public Health together with the chair group Nutrition and Disease.
