Course Public Space and Transitions: Planning, Design and Management

Are you dealing with complex transition challenges in infrastructure and public space? Or do you seek integrated solutions for climate adaptation, energy and mobility transitions, and circularity? This course will broaden your knowledge and skills in public space planning and infrastructure. And next to that, you will learn more about planning, design and management and sustainable cities.

This course has been developed by experts of Wageningen University in collaboration with the Stichting Managing Public Space. The course is part of three complementary courses, which can be followed separately.

Why follow this course?

After this course, you will be able to analyse the impact of different transitions in public spaces from different perspectives. You can distinguish the different roles of planning, design and management in public space; and understand how they can collaborate.

Using an integrated approach, you will develop a product that addresses transition problems in public spaces. You can demonstrate relevant competencies in several contexts by integrating theoretical perspectives with practical knowledge and experience.

Is this course for you?

This course caters to two groups:

  1. Public space management professionals with Bachelor-level experience or education;
  2. Planning or design Master's students.

Small teams are formed by both groups, with a maximum of 18 MSc students and 18 professionals per edition. Unsure if your English level is suitable? Reach out to the program manager or course leader.

Programme & topics

The course includes a variety of activities, such as lectures, exercises, discussions, group work, field work and presentations. During a period of 8 weeks you will work on challenges and transitions in public space, like:

Topics:

  • Urban planning, design and management
  • Transitions such as climate adaptation, mobility, circularity, energy transition
  • Integrated approach
  • Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary working

The estimated study load is approximately 80 up to 90 hours (please take this into account when planning). This includes:

  • Scheduled afternoon sessions on Mondays and Thursdays, which will take place on campus or online
  • In December, an afternoon: excursion to Utrecht (edition 2022)
  • A full week in December: an intensive workshop

Final presentations will probably scheduled for Tuesday, 19 December, in the afternoon.

Mixed Classroom

During 8 weeks, you will work on challenges and transitions in public spaces. Your planning, design and management work is connected to state-of-the-art scientific knowledge through lectures and knowledge clips. Professionals and master students collaborate to work on complex challenges in the public realm. Experience the strength of an integral and transdisciplinary approach to these complex issues.
