Negative GHG emissions and longtime sequestration (C fixation) through development of new C-based products

Biogebaseerde producten kunnen bijdragen aan het verminderen van de klimaatverandering. Langdurige opslag van deze koolstof in biobased producten en/of substitutie van producten met hoge broeikasgasemissies zal de netto koolstofbalans van het productiesysteem bepalen. Er bestaan veel ideeën voor vervanging van materialen, chemicaliën en energiebronnen met biogebaseerde alternatieven, maar er is een gebrek aan inzicht in de potentiële schaal van toepassing en langetermijneffecten en gevolgen zijn niet bekend.

Bio-based products can contribute to mitigating climate change. Long-term storage of renewable carbon in products and substitution of fossil based products with high greenhouse gas emissions will improve the net carbon balance of the production system significantly. Many examples are available for substitution of materials, chemicals and energy sources with bio-based alternatives, however there is a lack of insight in the potential scale of application and long-term effectson GHG emissions.

In this project we aim to

  • Provide insight into the potential of different biomass flows and biobased products to capture and store carbon through application and substitution of other materials.
  • Develop approaches and methodologies to assess this potential, cost effectiveness and impacts on natural capital of different biomass flows, using case studies for:
    • Marine based products (seaweed and shellfish)
    • Wood based products (forestry residues, wood processing by products etc.)
    • Plant based lignocellulose fibres, eg from bamboo, agro-residues
    • Chemical substances
