Project

Developing harmonized calculation rules and exploring consumer communication for environmental footprint

The objective of this project is to: develop a complete set of harmonized calculation rules in compliance with the PEF-methodology of the European Commission for calculating the environmental footprint of fruits and vegetables.

In recent years much progress has been made with PPP Hortifootprint, which resulted in the publication of the Hortifootprint Category Rules (HFCR) for floriculture and fruits and vegetables. HFCR is a set of rules to calculate the environmental footprint of horticultural products. In the extension of PPP Hortifootprint, floriculture proceeded to develop Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) within the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) framework of the European Commission (EC). FloriPEFCR is expected to be published in 2023 and will be a solid basis for the florisector to achieve the objectives described above. Tool builders are already working on tools, creating much insights, improvement options and allowing non-experts to work with FloriPEFCR. The consortium developing a PEFCR should at least represent 51% of the European market in terms of yearly turnover or production. In the extension of the PPP HortiFootprint (2020-2022), the fruit and vegetable sector did not meet this requirement and therefore the floriculture sector proceeded without the fruit and vegetable sector.
