This hands-on workshop, co-organised with 4TUResearchData, will focus on Unix shell and version control using Git. It will cover basic concepts and tools, including program design, version control, data management, and task automation.
Join us for a 2-day hands-on workshop on Unix Shell and Version Control with Git!
Build practical skills to work more efficiently from the command line, manage your code and files with Git, and collaborate with confidence.
In short
The course is aimed at WUR researchers, PhD candidates, and BSc & MSc graduate students. You'll learn the basic skills for using the Unix shell and version control with Git, and build a solid foundation in research software competence. Topics we will touch upon:
- Git@wur
- Git local vs. Git remote
- Start a local/remote repository
- Synchronising with Git push & pull
- Branch & merge
- Fork vs. Clone
- Pipes, Loops & Shell scripts
- Data & software publishing with 4TU. ResearchData
Is this workshop for you?
If you are a novice and work with code, data, or research workflows, these skills are foundational. Here are four concrete reasons to join:
- Work efficiently from the command line
The Unix shell lets you navigate directories, automate repetitive tasks, manipulate files in bulk, and build reproducible workflows , all faster and more precisely than with a graphical interface. - Protect your work with version control
Git ensures your progress is never lost. You can track every change, recover earlier versions instantly, and maintain a complete, structured history of your project. - Experiment without risk
With branching and version tracking, you can test new ideas, refactor code, or explore alternative analyses while preserving a stable working version. - Collaborate and ensure reproducibility
Git enables structured collaboration and transparent change tracking, while command-line skills make your workflows scriptable and reproducible , essential for robust, open, and auditable research.
Requirements
You don't need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. You should bring a laptop with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc.) for which you have administrative rights. Before attending, you should have a few specific software packages installed (listed here).
More information & registration
You can find more info and register at the workshop's website.
There's a maximum of 30 participants. After you've registered, we'll send you an Outlook invitation. If you are unable to attend, please let us know so that someone else can join.
Please email Lingtong Gai with any questions you might have.
This workshop is co-organised by 4TUResearchDara, WDCC, and WUR Library.
