Landscape design with an eye for the future

Now on view

From November 6, 2025, to April 3, 2026, the Library's Special Collections presents an exhibition on the work of garden and landscape architect Voorhoeve, comparing his designs with a modern design approach for the Oosterbeek region.

Landscape design with an eye for the future: Voorhoeve and a current vision, from 6 November 2025 to 3 April 2026

Landscape architect Samuel Voorhoeve was a passionate advocate for the preservation of the "natural beauty of the landscape." This vision was reflected in all his designs for estates, parks, and gardens, as well as in his work on villa parks, avenues, and squares. He saw it as his mission to harmoniously integrate cultural elements into the natural landscape that was already there.

Voorhoeve created designs throughout the Netherlands, but the southern Veluwe formed the heart of his work. Here, the steep edge of the glacial ridge with its many views over the Rhine Valley offers a natural setting unique to the Netherlands. He drew much of his inspiration from his home region, Oosterbeek, where he passionately designed parks and estates along the slopes of the Veluwe, always starting from the contour map as his guide.

Many of the landscapes Voorhoeve designed can still be experienced today much as he originally envisioned them. His creations grew and flourished - but the man himself gradually faded into obscurity.
