New photos in Food for Mars & Moon Collection
Can astronauts' urine be used to improve the growth of vegetables on Mars? Forty new photos about this research experiment have been added to the WUR Image Collections.
The photos show the next step in the research project Food for Mars & Moon to feed the future inhabitants of Mars and the Moon. The researchers are invesigating if urine can be safely used as manure to let plants grow on Mars soil simulant.
As an exobiologist (space farmer) at Wageningen University, and as a big science fiction fan I cannot imagine a more fun and exciting adventure than the journey to Mars or the Moon to establish a human settlement there. Sounds like science fiction to you? Not to me! By conducting scientific research we can make the epic journey to Mars possible
In 2013, a small team from Wageningen Environmental Research, started the first large scale experiment to investigate if plant species could grow on Mars and Moon soil. They used soil regolith simulants from the NASA.
