Open Access publishing routes
Open Access literature is digital, online, free of charge, and often free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. The terms for onward sharing and reuse of Open Access content will depend on the licence.
Open Access: pros and cons
Publishing Open Access ensures that your research is used to its full potential and thus has many advantages. However, there are also some potential disadvantages to take into account.
Funder Open Access policies
The Dutch government states that publicly funded research should be freely available and strives towards 100% Open Access. Major research funders have incorporated this ambition into their Open Access policies and requirements.

Open Access agreements and discounts
Publishers often charge fees, so-called Article Processing Charges (APCs) for publishing articles Gold Open Access. These fees differ between journals and publishers. However, sometimes you don’t have to pay the APC. Find your options below.
Taverne Amendment
If you can’t immediately publish Gold or Hybrid Open Access, you are allowed to publish the final published version of your work Open Access six months after the first (online) publishing date, through a special article in the Dutch Copyright Act.
